Hurricane
Rita Churches
These little churches have been made from materials
salvaged after Hurricane Rita. There is a similarity
between this church and the people of southwest Louisiana.
Our people have shown determination and faith in picking
up the pieces of their lives--in building our area
back again. They have reached out to one another with
love and kindness. They have shown patience and strength
in adversity. Let us remember to be thankful and give
praise to our Lord for being with us and watching
over us at all times.
The little churches were built by residents
using debris found in their area. They started with
the idea of making several to auction off at their
church to raise money for the Catholic churches that
were damaged by the storm. The response was more than
they expected. They ended up getting about $300.00
for each one.
The residents of Cameron Parish in southwest
Louisiana are still homeless today. Still picking
up the pieces of their lives. Still waiting and hoping
for support and assistance to return to their home
parish, begin rebuilding their homes, families and
lives.
Today, they are not able to do that
- as clean up efforts, soil testing and general infrastructure
services are still being performed. The news may have
forgotten them, their fellow citizens may not know,
but today they are suffering the same devastation,
loss, hunger and more that Hurricane Rita deposited
into their lives.
