Volunteers on Call, Inc. sent a team in the summer
of 2004 to assist in this impoverished area and hopes
to make this an annual effort.
Servicing the needs of the local West Virginia Appalachia
population is an ongoing need. The demand is greatest
for medical assistance as well as rebuilding and refurbishing
projects of marginalized residents.
Year round, teams from various parts of the country
visit the SRSH project with volunteers ready and willing
to help where the need is greatest. In some instances
houses lack the basic necessities like running water
and sewage systems.
Many local residents of this area suffer from malnutrition
as evidenced in their lackluster countenances, listless
bodies and loss of hair. Many have severe dental conditions
due to poor diets.
Many are uneducated since they live too far from schools
and cannot afford transportation. Illiteracy is rampant
in this part of the United States.
