In the wake of so many natural disasters around the
world and in our country, the victims of Hurricane
Rita may have been overlooked by some. But the residents
and communities of Cameron Parish, LA were not overlooked
by the storm’s merciless destruction which has
left the area completely desolate. Volunteers on Call,
Inc. recently visited with parish officials, assessed
the area needs and saw the decimated area of Cameron
Parish made up of 5 cities.
The storm ravaged Cameron Parish with over 30 foot
walls of water and over 450 tornado touch downs. The
lives of residents are inexplicably changed forever
as they return to the place where their homes stood
and find nothing. The desolate miles of destruction
and debris seem to be never ending, but hope for the
future is alive in the hearts of the Cameron community.
Today, Cameron looks toward the future while they
wait on the present. No one knows when they will get
housing, no one knows when they will be able to rebuild,
no one know if their insurance will pay. In a world
of unknowns the community band together to get children
back in school, adults back to work, families in some
kind of housing.
The area of Cameron Parish has an inumberable amount
of needs, but the essentials facing them today are:
- Laptop computers for the school teachers
- Woodworking, Welding and Agriculture machinery
for teaching classrooms
- Everyday paper goods such as: paper plates, cups,
utensils, toilet paper, feminine products, cleaning
supplies, washing detergent, etc.
Volunteers on Call recently visited the Cameron Parish
on December 2-6th, 2005. During that time we evaluated
the needs of the community and distributed items that
had been generously donated by partners and donors.
We plan to return to Cameron in 9-12 months to help
with rebuilding efforts and act as advocates for the
community to generate interest, support and direct
contributions.
