When people think of Costa Rica beautiful beach resorts and canopied rain forests come to mind. What doesn't come to mind is the reality of life just miles from these areas, people existing in squalor and subsistent conditions.

In Costa Rica VOC volunteers have spent time with the aged, some who have been abandoned and left to die. They have worked with children sitting on splintered wood acting as makeshift desks and taught in classrooms that had no walls. They have lived in homes and shared meals with some of some of the poorest in Costa Rica. They have given children their first pair of shoes.
