At 14,000 feet above sea leavel, Bolivia boasts the
highest capital and international airport in the world.
It also holds claim to the highest and deepest lake,
Titicaca, sharing borders with neighboring Peru. What
it doesn't boast about, however, is one of the highest
levels of poverty in the Western hemisphere.
Driven by economic need, many uneducated peasants
come into large cities such as LaPaz and Cochabamba
looking for work and for ways to improve their lives.
Their expectations are dimished to find unemployment,
overpopulated cities, straining demands on the infrastructure,
crime, theft, and pollution. Shanty towns made of
cardboards, reeds and branches have sprung up along
highways and city streets. in 1976 the population
of Cochabamba was +/- 200,000. Today it exceeds one
million. Many children are left alone and are at risk
all day long, while parents are away trying to earn
a menial living. Many have nowhere to go.
In 2003 VOC founder had the opportunity to join a
team of volunters that would build an athletic field,
finish off a classroom and outdoor bathroom for a
school in the community of Bethel, Cochabamba giving
countless children in this community a safe environment
and a place to go during the day.
