Volunteers on Call, Inc. plans to raise $100K by the end of 2010 to assist in the relief efforts in Haiti. This will be used to purchase food, water, nutritionals, toiletries, clothing and tents as well as a used double cab, 4 wheel drive, diesel, truck to allow the more efficient and expedient distribution of relief supplies in the hardest-to- reach areas.
Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. Some would say that it is the poorest country in the world. Most children die before the age of five due to malnutrition or illnesses associated with dehydration. Desperate parents have been known to feed their children mud to keep their tummies full. Restavak children are given away by parents who cannot feed them to families with means. Oftentimes these innocents are abused, neglected and treated in less than sub-human conditions. Add to these ongoing realities the unfathomable destruction from the recent earthquake and one soon comes to the conclusion that Haiti is in the greatest need of any nation in our lifetime.
After nearly three years of researching numerous agencies, groups and individuals to work through in Haiti and spurred on by the recent earthquake, Volunteers on Call, Inc. has partnered with Help for Haiti, Inc. (HFH) to aid in the relief efforts there.
Volunteers on Call, Inc. will be working through HFH who have been in Haiti for over two decades, already have people on the ground, have developed an extensive network-- staff with a secure logistical infrastructure in the country. The relief supplies will be shipped from the US to Haitian ports that have not been affected by the earthquake. If necessary, overflow supplies will be briefly stored in HFH’s guarded warehouse and then trucked by HFH relief workers and VOC volunteers to the neediest sites.
HFH is to date one of the most efficient and established agencies in this very difficult and bureaucratic nation. HFH has a history in that country, to date having distributed over $17million in aid. Coupled with Volunteers on Call, Inc. also a 501(c)(3) not profit, all-volunteer agency with no staff or administrative overhead, financial contributions and in-kind donations will receive the highest and best use to reach the greatest in need.
